Muztag Ata and Karakul

Muztag Ata literally means “ice mountain father,” the highest peak of Kunlun Mountain. Despite an altitude of 7,509 meters, it is one of the relatively easier of 7,000-plus-meter peaks in the world to scale, because of its gentle western slope and the drier weather of Xinjiang. Photos: Wu Jie/

Water streaming down the Muztag and other adjacent snow-covered mountains converge to Karakul or “black lake” in English.
