The US embassy team emerged as the champion of the diplomatic basketball tournament on April 27 at the CBD Sports Culture Square in Beijing.
The US embassy team, consisting of up to six Chinese men and runners-up of the inaugural event, overpowered Min’an Property and Casualty Insurance Company 42:22 in the final of the Second Embassy Hoop Fest, organized by the Global Times.
A total of 12 embassies and four sponsor teams took part in the annual 3-on-3 event.
The 16 teams played round robin in group stage before the top two teams in each of the four groups made into the last 8.
Thailand, US, Min’an and the Global Times fought their way through to the semifinals.
“We didn’t expect to reach the semifinals. We played a lot better than we had expected,” said Tajasarn Hanhiran, first secretary of the Royal Thai Embassy.
“But it’s so hot to play outdoors. Playing indoors would be better. We will join the event next year,” Hanhiran said.
The US embassy outpaced the Global Time in the semifinal before going on to defeat Min’an insurance.
The Serbian embassy won the inaugural title in 2012 but didn’t join this year’s event.
