US will send 100,000 American Students to study in China by 2014

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday celebrates the launch of a new organization called the “100,000 Strong Foundation,” which aims to have 100,000 American students studying in China by 2014.

The Ford Foundation donated $ 1 million to set up the Foundation in May 2012. And in January of this year, Fang Li Bangqin Foundation, located in the San Francisco Bay Area, made a commitment to donate the same amount of money.

If you speak Chinese or Spanish, it almost guarantees that you can have a job in your chosen field, said Gary Locke, US Ambassador to China said to student representatives from various parts of New York City in an event organized by the Association of Asia (Asia Society) in the late December last year.

Also in December last year, the US National Intelligence Council (NIC) released the report "Global Trends 2030: Alternative Worlds”. It predicted that Asia’s overall strength based on GDP, population, military spending, and technical input will be more than the sum of that of the North America and Europe by the year 2030. And there is a prediction that China is likely to surpass the US to become the world's largest economy a number of years before that.

Until now, the 100,000 Strong Initiative -- announced by President Obama on his trip to China in 2009 -- has operated inside the State Department. Thursday's 1 p.m. ceremony marks its transition to a non-profit, nongovernmental organization operating independently.
