China’s rise brings benefits to Chinese-American actors in US

The economic revival of China and the rapid development of China’s film market are contributing to the rising status of Chinese-American and Asian-American actors and actresses in Hollywood.

Mike Medavoy, chairman of Phoenix Pictures, said on June 18 that China’s rise is heralding a golden era of development for Chinese-American actors and actresses in the US. Rising numbers of Chinese film lovers and cinemas have made China the second largest film market in the world. More US films and co-productions are being released in China. All these will offer Chinese-American actors and actresses more acting opportunities. Medavoy admitted that prejudices against minority groups do exist in the US. But he added that such prejudices exist in every country, and there are still plenty of opportunities in the US, and the election of a black president serves as a good proof of that.

Medavoy indicated barriers will eventually break down and more talents will come into spotlight. Appearance of Chinese actors and actresses in films will definitely attract more Chinese viewers and increase box-office revenues in China, but Medavoy emphasized the principle of “right roles for right Chinese actors and actresses.” Films should be based on a sense of reality and plots should be credible.

China is opening up to the outside world: more Chinese people are running Western companies, more Westerners are living in China, more Chinese people are studying in US schools, and more US schools are offering Chinese language courses. The two cultures will eventually come together. Medavoy said he firmly believes Chinese and American people take interest in each other’s culture with mutual respect. He wished both sides a successful future.
