String-139 series concert: Irene Atienza and Douglas Lora
Irene Atienza and Douglas Lora stand at the intersection of two of the world's greatest musical traditions: those of Spain and Brazil. Their interpretations of the classic Latin catalogue of boleros, fados, tangos, sambas, and bossa-nova are steeped in reverence for the traditional forms, but never limited by them.

With interpretations that search for contemporary meaning in these classic works, and new and thoroughly modern compositions that bring their rich cultural heritage to new audiences, Atienza and Lora perform with one guitar and one voice. The simplicity of the assembly, matched with their profound artistry, brings audiences performances that are rare in their intimacy, sophistication, sensuality, and power.

Since their debut in 2011, Irene Atienza and Douglas Lora have performed in the major capitals of Brazil and Spain, as well as important American cultural centers, including New York City and Washington, DC. The duo's first recording, "Parcerias"(Partnerships) was released in 2014 and features special guests, percussionist Alexandre Lora, and the winner of seven consecutive Jazz Journalists Association "Clarinetist of the Year" awards, the Israeli multi-instrumentalist, Anat Cohen.

"Parcerias is the result of a perfect balance between Irene's voice and the guitar arrangements by Douglas Lora, member of the Brasil Guitar Duo. The Spanish singer doesn't try to sing sambas with flamenco arrangements but lends the typical Spanish accent to standards by Vinicius de Morais and Noel Rosa. The result is very delicate and well drawn by Douglas's simple and economic accompaniments."

"Parcerias" travels beyond the territory of sambas, with Boleros and Baiões. The Samba, as the Flamenco, reveals in Irene's voice and Douglas's guitar, a rare and beautiful encounter.

- JulioMaria - Folha de SãoPaulo, São Paulo
