Robert Daly committed to Sino-US exchanges

Hoping for better relations between China and the US

However, Daly said the American people still don’t know much about the whole picture in China. “We need a platform for our highly professional experts and traditional Sinologists to exchange ideas with each other.” When talking about the Confucius Institute, Daly said, “They do provide American people the opportunity to learn the Chinese language, but I am not sure whether they can play a major role in increasing the soft power of China. Contemporary Chinese culture has little influence in the US currently, so let’s wait and see.”

“We hold various kinds of attitudes toward each other. Both of us have changed over the past 20 years. We are facing many opportunities and problems. It would be naïve to use emotional words to describe the relations between our two countries. The challenge lies in the fact that the relations in the 21 century are unprecedented and there is no discourse system to define it,” he said.
