Jiang Shaofeng: A passion for tap dancing

Known as the best tap dancer in China, Jiang Shaofeng (姜少峰) is making efforts to promote tap dance in China despite the fact that this type of dance isn’t popular here due to its limitations such as shoes and floor boards that together produce perfect sounds.

Natural talent in music

A native of Gansu province, Jiang developed an interest in performing when he was in junior high school. He was so obsessed with imitating Michael Jackson that he just practiced at home and between classes. “I always danced or sang pop with my guitar at school parties. I was a celebrity in the eyes of my schoolmates. You know, I received a lot of love letters from girls after each party,” Jiang laughed.

Because of his natural talent in music, Jiang said his mother wanted him to apply to Sichuan Conservatory of Music after he graduated from junior high school. “I had learned a bit of classical guitar in my spare time so my teacher wanted me to further my skill with classical guitar in the conservatory,” he said.

Jiang started learning to dance thanks to the suggestion of one of his mother’s friends. “She told my mother that I would need to improve my artistic temperament if I pursued a performing career and dancing would be a good way to help me with this,” he said. The friend recommended a teacher to his mother and Jiang started to learn ballroom dance. To everyone’s surprise, he got the second prize in a local competition after about two months’ learning.
