With a sweet smile on his face, Chen Jing (陈竞) reports on show business at home and abroad for a program called Daily Entertainment Express (每日文娱播报) on BTV-1 (北京电视台). He has been working for the BTV for nearly 10 years. As a professional host who tells stories about stars, Chen is attempting to make inroads into the acting world himself, with a wish to broaden his career.

Childhood dream

In the past 10 years, Chen has appeared as a host for about 20 different programs. “Working in a TV station is tiring, but I feel passionate about what I am doing. I feel happy when I receive a letter from a viewer whether he or she praises or criticizes my program,” he said.

Chen admitted he used to be a shy boy when he was in primary school. He was born in Changsha, Hunan province. His primary school had a small broadcasting station. “I often walked close to the door and peeped into the room, wanting to see what was happening inside. I envied those working in the broadcasting station, but I didn’t have the courage to say to anyone that I wanted to join them,” he said, with a smile on his face.

Close to the graduation from primary school, Chen heard from a friend that a radio station in his city was recruiting child reporters. “I felt embarrassed to express myself in front of familiar faces such as my parents and teachers, but the feeling was just the opposite before total strangers,” he said. He did a good job in the interview and a subsequent test and became a reporter for a children’s program of the station. “I thought of it as a great achievement in my life,” he said with a sense of pride in his voice.

Chen worked as a reporter for the station until graduation from junior high school. That was quite a good start for him. “It seemed that a seed in my heart began to be watered and it started to grow from that time. It is the work experience in the radio station that inspired me to become a host on radio or TV,” he said.
