Building new type of relations

During the talks, Xi proposed forging a new type of relationship between the two major powers and discussed its connotations with Obama, who agreed to the idea.

Chinese State Councillor Yang Jiechi indicated that the connotations of the new type of relationship between major powers include three aspects.

First, the two countries should be partners instead of opponents. Disagreements and disputes should be solved through dialogue and cooperation.

Second, the two countries should respect each other’s social system, development path, core interests and main concerns. They should progress together by seeking common ground on major questions while reserving differences on minor points.

Third, the two countries should give up the zero-sum thinking and create a win-win situation. They should pursue their own interests while also considering that of the other’s. They should promote mutual progress while seeking self-development.

Yang Jiechi said this idea reflected the political wisdom and unavoidable responsibility of the two countries’ leaders. During the talks, Obama also stressed that China’s rejuvenation would benefit both China and the US.
