Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in Beijing on Wednesday that China and the US "can absolutely become good partners", despite growing concerns that elusive US President Donald Trump would bring more uncertainties to the world's most important bilateral relationship.

"Indeed, there were many worries over the prospects of the China-US relations, but I want to tell you that the China-US relations are heading toward a positive development after the two countries have made joint efforts to deepen communication ... China and the US can absolutely become good partners if the two countries stick to the principle of no conflict, no confrontation and win-win cooperation," Wang told reporters at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual sessions of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Wang saw a telephone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Trump last month as an important sign of an easing of the China-US tensions, in which the US president honored the one China principle and the two leaders pledged to lift the bilateral relations to a higher level.

In January, US President Trump openly said that he would not commit to the US agreement with China of not recognizing Taiwan diplomatically until he saw progress from Beijing on its currency and trade practices.

At the press conference, the foreign minister also called on the two countries to show mutual respect to each other's political system and break away from the cold-war thinking.

"Firstly, we have full confidence in our own social system and development path. And of course, we are also glad to see a stronger US ... Secondly, (China and the US) should break the traditional thinking of zero-sum game, as the two countries' common interests are becoming bigger and the cooperation largely outweighs the divergences," Wang said.

When asked about his impression about US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Wang described the top US diplomat as "a good listener and communicator".

"I hope that we two could build a good work relationship for the healthy development of the China-US relations."
