China's first lady Peng Liyuan has joined the Duchess of Cambridge, Victoria Beckham and Charlize Theron, among others, on this year's Vanity Fair International Best-Dressed List.

Peng, 51, has been attracting wide attention for her fashion sense, favoring smart suits, classic handbags and elegant designs by an independent homegrown label.

The magazine highlighted her ensemble when accompanying President Xi Jinping during a trip to Russia in the spring, when she wore a black double-breasted and belted coat and handbag by a Guangzhou-based label.

The Russia trip solidified her status as a style icon.

"She's known to be elegant and fashionable," real estate agent Chen Li told The Associated Press in March. "But she's also very low-key and doesn't seem arrogant in the way that you usually associate with the wives of top leaders."

Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said, "She's a very beautiful person, very warm, and to chat with her in English was very wonderful."

In May, Peng ranked 54 on Forbes' list of the world's 100 most powerful women for burnishing China's image overseas with her Made-in-China taste in fashion.

Peng is a member of the Public Diplomacy Association, an organization tasked with making China more appealing abroad, and the clothes she wore have caught the attention of the public, boosting their popularity at home.

The US fashion magazine's best-dressed list includes royal families, top athletes and pop singers.

The Duchess of Cambridge, who recently gave birth, made the list for the fourth time since 2008.

Hollywood star Charlize Theron, fashion designer Victoria Beckham, basketball player LeBron James and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards also made their way onto the list.
